Skype History:

Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. On August 29, 2003 Skype announced the public release of Skype Beta and the arrival of P2P (peer-to-peer networking) Telephony.

On October 22, 2003, to commemorate the landmark achievement of over 100,000 simultaneous users and 1.5 million downloads of Skype in just 51 days, they announced that the Skype website and software will be available in an array of different colors in the coming weeks.

April 6, 2004 - Skype launched Skype for pocket PC taking free calling mobile.

July 27, 2004 - Skype launched its free, Skype for Windows Version 1.0 software, that included SkypeOut, enabling Skype users to pre-pay and call any phone number in the world at highly competitive local rates.

August 29, 2004 - Skype's first anniversary was celebrated with more than 9 million users from every country in the world.

August 31, 2004. Skype launched the beta version of Skype for Mac OS X.

October 20, 2004 - Skype reached a new milestone and had more than 1 million simultaneous users globally connected to each other at the same time. To daate, Skype software had been downloaded more than 30 million times in more than 210 countries and territories around the world.

January 5, 2005 - Skype launched v1.1 for Windows and introduced its new Chat feature, allowing Skype users to hold multi-person or forum-style conversations with groups of people. Chat expands the existing one-to-one chatting and other instant message features in previous versions of Skype, and allows groups of up to 50 to communicate.

February 14, 2005 - Motorola, Inc. and Skype Technologies S.A. announced their intention to work together on a co-marketing collaboration that will provide greater connectivity options and access for Skype’s more than 25 million registered worldwide users. The initial focus of the collaboration included co-marketing of new optimized Motorola ‘Skype Ready’ companion products, such as Bluetooth® headsets, dongles, and speakerphones, as well as delivery of the Skype Internet Telephony experience on select Motorola mobile devices.

March 23, 2005 - Skype launched its Windows version 1.2 (v 1.2) with enhanced user benefits including a centralized Contacts list, which allows users access to their list of contacts from multiple devices from wherever they connect to Skype, and a new 'Getting Started Wizard,' which makes finding friends, importing contacts and making test calls even easier. To date, more than Skype had 31 million registered users growing by more than 160,000 new users per day.

By May 27, 2005, Skype had more than 40 million registered users.

June 13, 2005 - Skype launched its Skype Voicemail, allowing customers to continually maintain their Skype availability and ubiquity, even while offline. First available in beta in April 2005, Skype Voicemail is Skype’s second pre-paid premium offering. Also on Jun 13, 2005, Skype released Skype for Windows v1.3, offering feature improvements to enhance usability and ubiquity through extended integration with other desktop applications.

July 27, 2005- Skype announced new lower calling rates in honor of the one year anniversary of SkypeOut, Skype’s first premium service, offering the 47 million people already using Skype low-cost calling to landline and mobile phones.

August 2005 - Since its launch in August 2003, Skype has been downloaded more than 155 million times in 225 countries and territories. Over 52 million people registered to use Skype’s free services, with over 3 million simultaneous users. Skype has more than 2 million premium customers, with over 12 billion minutes served.

Oct. 11, 2005 - Linksys®, a Division of Cisco Systems, Inc., the recognized leading provider of voice, wireless and networking hardware for the consumer, Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) and small business user, and Skype, the Global Internet Communications Company, announced their global relationship that will include marketing a new cordless phone that takes free Skype Internet phone calling off the computer and puts it into the hands of callers.

November 21, 2005 - Motorola, Inc. and Skype announced America’s first Skype-certified Bluetooth headset solution, the Motorola Wireless Internet Calling Kit. Available at 3,500 RadioShack stores nationwide, the Motorola Wireless Internet Calling Kit enables Skype users to experience the freedom of wireless while making free, unlimited voice calls over the Internet.

October 14, 2005 - eBay completed its previously announced acquisition of Skype.

December 1, 2005 - Skype released the beta version of Skype 2.0, the newest version of its software that allows anyone with an Internet connection to make free Internet calls. The software is designed for greater ease of use, integrated video calling, and enhanced features.

December 1, 2005 - Skype partnered with Logitech to jointly market Skype video and offer select Skype-certified Webcams including the Logitech® QuickCam® Fusion webcam and the QuickCam® for Notebooks Pro webcam. The Webcams come complete with Logitech® Video Effects software, a 1.3 megapixel sensor, Logitech® RightLight technology, Logitech® RightSound technology, intelligent face tracking and a Logitech headset, providing a complete package to begin using Skype video right away.

Skype is also working with Creative, who introduced a Skype Certified Webcam for use with its new video-based Internet phone service.

March 9, 2006 - Skype announced Skype for Business, a solution designed to help small businesses easily manage communications, improve productivity and reduce costs.

April 28, 2006 - Skype reached a major milestone when it passed 100 million registered users.

June 6, 2006 - Comverse, a subsidiary of Comverse Technology, Inc., and Skype announced Skype Klonies™, an innovative avatar service that lets users personalize Skype with special characters that reflect their personalities, moods and interests.

July 20, 2006 - Skype announced collaboration with hardware partners to deliver the first WiFi phones for Skype™ software, making Internet calling on the move a reality. By enabling consumers to make Internet calls without a computer, Skype is freeing people from their computers and saving them money.

August 31, 2006 - Skype announced cordless phones that do not require a running computer, which are provided by well known hardware partners of Skype. This new class of phone enables Skype™ users to make and receive both Skype calls over the Internet and traditional landline calls, without a computer, and offers the added convenience of a cordless phone.

Skype is available in 27 languages and is used in almost every country around the world. Skype generates revenue through its premium offerings such as making and receiving calls to and from landline and mobile phones, as well as voicemail and call forwarding.
